Because the Boy Scouts of America is still refusing to allow gay men and boys to participate in the organization.
I’ve been reading about this and finding it so inspiring! Becoming an Eagle Scout takes a shocking amount of work, so it’s no small thing to give it up, even as an adult. I’ve read several similar letters that made me cry. A huge thanks to our straight allies and to everyone who is willing to speak up for a fairer world.
I should have noted that the link above has several letters just like the one I posted. It is absolutely inspiring. I am proud to be an ally and I hope I have a chance to do more!
And yes, Eagle Scouts are sacrificing something quite meaningful and personal. I am so impressed with each of them.
Have the Girl Scouts taken an “official opinion”?
Good question! The latest information that I found (LA Times article on the Boy Scout ban) reports that Girls Scouts don’t exclude anyone. Another difference is that Girl Scouts are not necessarily sponsored by church organizations, as many Boy Scout troops are.
Thanks for asking!
Also, there have been anecdotal reports of discrimination against lesbian scout leaders or gay-ally leaders. But the official policy is something like Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
